Championing innovation for a bright future
As an early adopter of cutting-edge technologies and original solutions, historic Raynham Hall continues to develop and diversify its estate for future generations

Regarded as one of the most elegant houses in Norfolk, Raynham Hall boasts a fascinating history. With significant connections to notable royals and parliamentary figures, the Townshend family has carved out a legacy, stretching back to the 12th century, that continues to benefit the county today.
Constructed in 1619 for Sir Roger Townshend, Raynham Hall is an impressive stately home featuring architectural advancements considered pioneering for their time. Following the family’s honourable ascension to the title of Viscount after the English Civil War, it underwent substantial transformations in the early 18th century under the direction of the 2nd Viscount, Charles ‘Turnip’ Townshend. A stunning example of the Palladian style, the hall still showcases remarkable classical features such as the grand central marble entrance and stone staircase.
Raynham Hall is currently the cherished family residence of Lord Thomas Charles Townshend (Viscount Raynham), CEO of the Raynham Estate, his wife Lady Octavia Raynham and their two children. They continue to work together to drive the estate forward, guiding Raynham Hall into a new era.
“I’m immensely passionate about ensuring everything is done to a high standard, whether it involves the crops we grow, the beef we rear or the energy we produce,” says Tom. “While we remain focused on the ‘here and now,’ we believe it’s important to reflect on the past to shape our actions today and define our future.”
As part of these efforts, Tom has expanded the agricultural operations to include a 680-strong beef suckler herd grazing on 600 acres of grassland, alongside arable farming across more than 4,200 acres.

“I love having the cattle around; they are such a fantastic asset to the estate,” Tom continues. “In addition to supplying high-end retailers such as Harrods and Selfridges and local restaurants like the Dabbling Duck in Great Massingham, we offer ‘beef boxes’ for local pick up. They have been so popular that we will soon be launching an online shop where customers can order our beef for next-day delivery around the country.”
The cattle also produce a beneficial by-product, which is applied to the land as an organic fertilizer, along with the digestate they take from a BioGas plant that sits on the estate. This innovative approach builds on the family’s pioneering four-course rotation system, developed in the early 18th century, and has reduced their reliance on artificial fertilizers by up to 50%.
This is not the only inspiring project Tom and the team have been working on. Additionally, Raynham Estate has been focusing on several initiatives to boost green credentials and sustainability. These include the introduction of a 225-acre solar farm, the construction of a BioGas plant which supplies the gas main, and a parkland restoration scheme. They are also working to create wetland areas to help reduce nitrates and phosphates in the River Wensum. By minimising the estate’s carbon footprint and taking proactive measures to support Norfolk, the Townshends have fortified Raynham’s future for all to enjoy.
“Moving forward, we hope to share more of our scenic estate with locals and visitors through the continuation of hall tours, special events, wild meadow glamping experiences and exclusive venue hire for weddings,” says Tom. “We also offer unique dining in The Copse restaurant, located in our historic parklands. Whether you’re enjoying a casual lunch, an intimate dinner, or a special celebration, our restaurant provides the perfect setting to indulge in delicious cuisine with loved ones.”

Offering a creative seasonal menu featuring quality ingredients sourced from the estate and wider Norfolk, this hidden gem caters for up to 72 people. It serves as an atmospheric space for special experiences, including exclusive ‘secret suppers’ and private events. Soon, The Copse will be joined by another distinctive venue that celebrates the best of local produce in Raynham’s idyllic surroundings. Plans are underway to create an artisan food hub and farm shop, which will be complete with a café/restaurant.
“I’m thrilled to announce that the development and renovation of old farm buildings for our artisan food
hub is nearly complete,” says Tom. “By working in partnership with North Norfolk District Council and receiving support from the Rural England Prosperity Fund, we’ve established a central site for emerging businesses such as a distillery, brewery, bakery, food processor and charcuterie, to flourish.”
Work has not yet commenced on the farm shop, which will feature retail units, but exciting plans are in place for it to open by the end of 2026.
